Sumy State Medical University is located in the eastern city of Ukraine some 305 kilometer from capital Kiev with almost 290000 dwellers. The University has started its journey in 1948 and in the year 1992 it has started to teach Medicine as State Medical University. The Institute has the following laboratories: Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Studies Pathology Research Center Center for Morphological Studies Regional Centre for Environmental, Сhemical and Toxicological Monitoring and Biomedical Research Laboratory of Biomaterials Students and academic staff have an opportunity to enter PhD programs of 9 specialties. At present time, 50 graduate students and 3 doctoral students are studying for receiving academic degree. Currently, work is done by one individual research grant of the President of Ukraine.

The university was founded in 1956 according to the USSR Council of Ministers Directive dated May 6, 1956. then it was called Voroshilovgrad state medical university. The first acting rector was the head doctor of the regional hospital, the Honored doctor of Ukraine I. D. Vashenko. His successor became E. G. Palchevskiy. The history of Zaporozhye State Medical University comes back to the Women Pedagogic Courses organized in Odessa in 1903. In 1921 the Courses were reorganized into the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1935 it was reformed in the State Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1941 the life of the Institute was interrupted by the Great Patriotic war till 1944. In 1959 the Pharmaceutical Institute was transferred from Odessa to Zaporozhye and renamed in Zaporozhye Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1964 the Medical Faculty was opened and in 1968 Zaporozhye Pharmaceutical Institute was renamed into Zaporozhye Medical Institute. In 1975 Zaporozhye Medical Institute got a status of the Institute of the first category. In 1994 the Institute was reorganized into Zaporozhye State Medical University of the IV (the top) level of accreditation. Now it is of one of the leading Medical Universities in the system of medical education of Ukraine. It has become a training center for medical and pharmaceutical specialists for Ukraine and for foreign countries.
