The University of Perpetual Help DALTA Medical Center was first envisioned by its founders – Dr. Antonio Laperal Tamayo, his wife Dr. Daisy Moran-Tamayo, and their close friend and associate Ernesto Palanca Crisostomo – to be the realization of a longtime dream to pioneer quality healthcare in the once rustic areas of South Metro Manila. What they first built as a modest, 2-storey community hospital in 1975 (housing a mere 50 beds with a daily occupancy rate of 10 to 12 patients), today provides exemplary healthcare and medical service to a much larger community – the Filipino people.

St. Jude College was established in honor of St. Jude Thaddeus, the Apostle and Patron Saint of the Hopeful and the embodiment of the true Christian spirit. Through its allied health services, it started as the St. Jude Maternity Clinic in 1950. Faced with the growing health needs of the community and the breakthroughs and advances in allied medical sciences, the founders, Dr. Ramon D. Atienza, Jr. and his wife, Dr. Felicidad Calip-Atienza, expanded the Maternity Clinic from a two-storey building to a five-storey building with a 120-bed capacity. Later, they built an eight-storey building to house the School of Nursing. The two edifices were inaugurated on the feast day of St. Jude Thaddeus on October 28, 1968. As a result, the Maternity Clinic was elevated to the status of a College for consistently producing outstanding students and exemplary topnotchers in the licensure or board examinations since 1971.

After successfully establishing Cebu Doctors’ Hospital, its core founders conceived the opening of a school of medicine as another venue of service that may have a significant effect and contribution to the welfare and progress of the nation. Through hard work and sheer determination, the Board of Directors of Cebu Doctors’ Hospital unselfishly devoted their time to secure from the then Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports, a permit to operate a medical school later called Cebu Doctors’ College of Medicine. On April 21, 1977, Cebu Doctors’ College of Medicine (CDCM) incorporation papers were signed and the Securities and Exchange Commission approved its status as a non-stock, non-profit foundation on December 21,1977. Cebu Doctors’ University College of Medicine envisions compleat physicians who provide optimum care to the patient, family, and community, and who continue to grow holistically through evidence-based scientific investigations while maintaining moral and ethical standards.
