Birla College of Arts, Science & Commerce (Autonomous), Kalyan, a multi faculty premier institution of higher learning, with an enrolment of more than 9,500 students (5,500 for UG, PG and Research Programmes) is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The College was established in 1972, by Kalyan Citizens’ Education Society with the blessings of Syt. B. K. Birla ji and Late Smt. Sarala ji Birla.
B.K. Birla College offers several Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce and Ph. The College has been sanctioned funds under the FIST Programme of DST to strengthen Teaching and Research Facilities in all Science Departments. It also has UGC sponsored Gandhian Studies Centre, Women’s Study Centre, Centre for Yoga and Philosophy, Centre for Epigraphy and Centre for Foreign Languages.
The College has been awarded ‘College of Excellence’ status by UGC (2015 - 2020).
The departments of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology have been awarded ‘Star Status’ by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, New Delhi in 2017. Recently, the departments of Mathematics, Information Technology and Computer Science have been recommended for support under strengthening component of Star College Scheme by DBT, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

Research is an integral part of teaching. 22 of our faculty members are Ph.D. Guides. Many are working on major / minor research projects and have published a number of research papers in national and international journals.

B.K. Birla College NCC Units have bagged the Vice Chancellor`s banner for 12 times out of 18 for being best NCC Units of University of Mumbai. Almost every year our cadets participate in Republic Day Camp, Thal Sainik Camp and All India Nausainik Camp.
In 2016 - 17, B.K. Birla College students were awarded 1st Prize for Best Team overall performance and 1st Prize for Best Presentation at the XXIV International Economics Convention, a research based competition. During 2017 - 18, our students have received award for Best Research Paper at XXV International Economics Convention.
For two consecutive years, i.e. 2016 - 17 and 2017 - 18, our Boys and Girls of Yoga team have stood First in the Inter Collegiate Yoga competition conducted by University of Mumbai and won 12 out of 12 Gold Medals. The Royal College of Arts, Science & Commerce – a dream project of the Founder, Asgar E. Lakdawala, was established in June 1989 and governed by the Royal Higher Education Society.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GOVERNING TRUST :
The Royal Society of Bombay was founded on 28th December 1966 by Asgar E. Lakdawala, a poor S.S.C. student at the time. He gathered together a very small group of four friends of his age hailing from poor families, and who had a spirit of service, sacrifice and understanding. The sole mission of the group was ‘Educational upliftment of poor and needy students of the Bohra Community’. Since 1966, year after year, an increasing number of benefactors from Bohra community realized the importance of the mission set by the founder, and today there are about 600 life and patron members associated with the trust. Since inception, the trust has strived to provide the basic needs of education, such as school bus service, payment of school fees, distribution of books, uniform and stationery to the underprivileged students.
In the year 1986, while working as a lecturer at Elphinstone College, Founder of the trust dreamt of establishing an Arts, Science and Commerce College and founded Royal Higher Education Society for the same purpose. For bringing his dream into reality, he with his likeminded co-workers requested the philanthropists from Bohra Community to donate funds for the college project. Philanthropists realised his vision , mission and understood the zeal with which he was requesting for funds. The plot of land admeasuring 10,186 square meters for this Educational Campus was generously donated by Late Ismailbhai Kanga, the then Chairman of Srishti Housing Complex. The financial support from the community resulted in establishing the Royal College of Arts, Science and Commerce in 1989. The present shape of the campus is the result of the continuous generous financial support from the philanthropists.
