About the Country- Although known to Arab and Malay sailors as early as the 10th century, Mauritius was first explored by the Portuguese in the 16th century and subsequently settled by the Dutch - who named it in honor of Prince Maurits van NASSAU - in the 17th century. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean. A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has earned one of Africa's highest per capita incomes.

Location- Located in the continent of Africa, Mauritius covers 2,030 square kilometers of land and 10 square kilometers of water. Mauritius does not share land borders with any countries.

Area- Mauritius has an area of 2,040 square kilometer making it the 183rd largest nation in the world.

Climate & Weather- The environment in Mauritius is typically tropical in the coastal regions with forests in the mountainous areas. There can also be a marked difference in temperature and rainfall from one side of the island to the other. Occasional tropical cyclones generally occurs between January to March and tend to disrupt the weather for only about three days, bringing a lot of rain.

Language- Creole 86.5%, Bhojpuri 5.3%, French 4.1%, two languages 1.4%, other 2.6% (includes English, the official language, which is spoken by less than 1% of the population), unspecified 0.1% .

Currency- The currency of Mauritius is the Mauritius Rupee (MUR). As well, the people of Mauritius are referred to as Mauritian.

Major Cities- The capital and largest city is Kathmandu.

Government- The politics of Mauritius take place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, in which the President is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of government who is assisted by a Council of Ministers. Mauritius has a multi-party system.

Transportation- Transportation in Mauritius is characterized by the network of roadways, ports, and airports. The island was originally only accessible by boat until 1922, when the first flight landed in Mauritius. There are currently no railways in Mauritius.
